This was part of a fun series of themed promos (done in the '90s), designed to keep kids entertained so their parents could eat their own damn pancakes in peace. I didn't do the comic illustration, just the high-level concepting and copy.
I always loved September and the whole back-to-school thing so I came up with this email campaign concept which was then executed by the design teams for direct and retail promotions.
Scope of Work: Although this ad was for a gardening book, the issue of Publisher's Weekly for which it was targeted was themed to religious books, so we played off on that for this ad.
